With the advent of high definition television sets, there are all kinds them coming out in different types of screen configurations. So how do these TV sets work? It all starts with the screen, of course. These screens are made of multiple layers. The core layer is a space composed of millions of compartmentalized cells. Each cell contains a mixture of noble gases and some mercury. How these cells work is practically similar to that of a fluorescent light. When voltage is applied in the cell, mercury is vaporized and the noble gases get charged, resulting in the formation of plasma. Mercury sheds this excess energy in the form of photons (light particles). These photons would then strike the phosphor coating of the cell, generating both heat and visible light. Each pixel of the TV set contains 3 cells comprising the 3 primary colors of visible light. It’s the varying voltages received by each cell that create different shades of colors.

There are different pros and cons of using a Plasma TV set. The primary advantage working on its favor is superior contrast. This is made possible by its ability to produce deeper shades of black. Also, because of its unique design, these TVs can be made in massive sizes without any dropoff in quality. In addition, the images produced in this TV don’t degrade when viewed from an angle, allowing it to possess wider viewing angles compared to other TVs such as those with LCD screens. But there are disadvantages too. While the overall design of these TVs has improved, burn-in is still present. Also, on average, they consume more electricity too.

Right now, plasma technology is one of the best when it comes to creating screens. And it just keeps on improving as the years pass by. Safe to say, this technology is here to stay.
