There are a lot of misconceptions about this television, and it is often because salespeople are saying the wrong things about it. So, what does it really mean if your TV is of the LED type? Actually, it is similar to an LCD TV. It is still an LCD system that creates the images shown in the screen, but it would be light emitting diodes (more popularly known as LEDs) that provide the backlighting so people can see the images. Why do LEDs have to be used as backlighting for these TVs. If you are familiar with LCD technology, it is that they are not capable of producing their own light. Because of this, LEDs are equipped to fulfill exactly that purpose.

Currently, there are 2 types of LED TV available in the market today. One is the so-called edge lighting system. In such a system, a series of LED lights are arranged at the outside of the screen. Because of such a setup, the light gets dispersed across the screen. The second type of LED TV is the so-called full-array system. As the name would suggest, that would mean there are LED lights spread out across the full area of the screen. Some of these full-array systems employ the so-called local dimming system, wherein some LEDs in the screen can go on and off at any given time, resulting in a higher contrast.

What are the advantages of using an LED TV? There are a lot of them actually. One of the biggest advantages it has is its low energy consumption. LEDs are known to be very efficient when it comes to energy. Also, it doesn’t use any mercury, meaning it’s more environmentally friendly than other screen setups. And its color saturation properties can be described as highly balanced. Because of these advantages, they are now commonly employed in all kinds of setups. And as the technology improves and more people use it, the prices can only be forecasted to go down in the near future.

The start of the holiday season is always a great time for you to evaluate if you’re really going to need a new television set or not. But is there really a need for you to upgrade the unit you have? You might ask yourself that question especially since almost every year TV manufacturers have some new feature that they add to the latest units that they so conveniently announce just a few days, or weeks prior to the start of the holiday season. There are actually different kinds of LCD TV sets out in the market nowadays — so much so, that it is extremely hard to choose which one you ought to purchase. Should you go for the LED TV that this certain manufacturer launched just recently? And what is the difference between LED and LCD by the way?

LED backlighting is not something new, and the technology for light emitting diodes has been used for a couple of years now. However, just recently, the use of LEDs as a backlight for LCD television sets has been on the upswing. So in essence, an LED TV is just an LCD TV which has LED backlighting instead of CCFL or Cold Cathode Flourescent backlighting. The difference in technology isn’t superficial though, because the fact of the matter is, an LED backlit TV is a lot more economical and more environment friendly as opposed to CCFL backlit LCD TV. The reasoning behind this is that since LED backlit television sets have been shown to last longer as opposed to LCD TV’s using CCFL, or Plasma television sets, this would mean that you’re going to enjoy a longer return of investment. This type of technology also does not make use of mercury which makes it a whole lot safer, which makes it an ideal choice if you happen to have kids at home.

One thing though that people might not like about purchasing an LED TV set is the price. But considering the performance that you’re going to get out of it, the premium price you’ll be paying is more than justified. And aside from the fact that these kinds of TV sets are durable, in most cases they outclass and even outperform conventional LCD television sets as well as Plasma television sets. There are rare cases, however, wherein you might experience discomfort when viewing something on an LED backlit TV set but this is easily remedied by changing the brightness settings of the said television sets.
